Durban’s contrasts, coastline, and an unexpected artistic moment

Day 236 from Durban to Mthaha

Durban, South Africa

With clear weather conditions, the day was dedicated to exploring more of Durban. Along the wide beachfront, powerful waves rolled in, drawing surfers who moved confidently through the surf and added energy to the shoreline.

Durban’s contrasts were on full display. Historic colonial-era buildings stood alongside contemporary landmarks, including the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, reflecting the city’s layered character. An unexpected encounter added a creative highlight to the day when a local artist approached and offered to paint the VW ID. Buzz, delivering a truly outstanding result.

By late afternoon, the journey continued inland, leaving the coast behind and heading into the mountains toward Kokstad.

Next stop: Mthatha!
