Day 82: Jianshui to Jinghong
The day began with a moment of genuine connection—a dedicated Volkswagen fan had travelled several hundred kilometres with his family to meet the team outside the hotel. His enthusiasm was a reminder of how far the ID. Buzz World Tour has reached, even in the most remote corners of China.
Along Familiar Routes
The journey south unfolded along well-maintained highways, with service stations offering welcome respite. These stops, echoing the layout and amenities of German rest areas, provided a sense of familiarity amidst unfamiliar landscapes. Comforts such as clean facilities and accessible food options made the long drive more manageable.
Arrival in the Tropics
As the road dipped into Yunnan’s southernmost reaches, the character of the landscape and architecture began to shift. Upon arrival in Jinghong, the city’s Southeast Asian influence was immediately evident—ornate rooftops, elephant sculptures, and a softer, more tropical ambience shaped the urban atmosphere. The presence of ethnic minorities added to the cultural richness, marking a clear transition as the tour neared the border with Laos.
