Day 60–61: Kuqa to Kumul
Unusual Sights and High Roads
The journey from Kuqa to Turpan began early, with the team heading out under clear skies and rising terrain. The route offered a mix of local charm and unexpected moments. One such scene stood out: a baby sleeping peacefully in a basket suspended from a roadside tree, undisturbed by passing traffic. A brief, surreal moment on a route full of contrasts.
Toll stations along the highway added another layer to the experience. The custom license plate used for the world tour caught the attention of staff at every checkpoint. Each stop became a small interaction, drawing interest and often smiles from those unaccustomed to seeing an international EV travelling deep across China.
Altitude and Energy
With four people onboard — the cameraman, a Chinese tour guide and an additional electrician to assist through regions with limited charging infrastructure — the ID. Buzz climbed to altitudes near 3,000 meters. Vast wind farms stretched across the hills, turbines turning in sync as the vehicle wound through the elevated landscape.
The unique vehicle continued to draw attention along the way. From curious stares to direct questions, locals remained fascinated by the idea of an electric road trip stretching across continents. Even roadside truck stops revealed surprises, with EV-style rigs and clean energy carriers hinting at a fast-evolving transport landscape.
Arrival in Turpan
Eventually, the road dipped dramatically. Turpan — known for its extreme geography — sits about 70 metres below sea level, making it one of the lowest cities on Earth. The team reached the city by nightfall and secured a charging location at a local garage. Using the Stoida charger, they tapped into a local grid delivering 30 kilowatts, allowing for a full overnight recharge.
Next stop: Guazhou.
