Temples, Traffic, and Unexpected Encounters in the Capital

Day 66: A Day in Beijing

Exploring the City

With a full day in Beijing ahead, the team took the ID. Buzz on a local route through the capital. From glass towers to tucked-away temples, the city offered a vivid contrast of old and new. The temperature climbed to 32°C, and while navigating the streets, we noticed something curious: scooter riders layered up in what looked like winter gear. These were actually lightweight airbag suits, designed for summer heat and safety—a uniquely Beijing sight.

Noodles and Nostalgia

In the afternoon, the team stopped at a popular local eatery called “Punk Rock Noodle,” where a fellow German expat struck up a conversation. It turned into an unexpected highlight, with stories exchanged over bowls of hand-pulled noodles.

Later, the day brought another surprise when a T2 van owner who’d been tracking the tour online arrived on the scene. Sharing road stories and admiring each other’s vehicles made for a memorable close to the afternoon.

Big City Movement

Beijing traffic brought its usual challenges, especially with fleets of trucks restocking the city’s shared yellow bicycles at every intersection. Still, the ID. Buzz held its own, cruising steadily toward the next stage.

With Beijing explored and the charger repaired, the tour now heads south.

Next stop: Shanghai.
