Understanding tyre terminology can make choosing, maintaining and comparing tyres much easier. Whether you’re looking at tyre sizes, load ratings, construction types or performance features, this glossary explains some of the most common tyre terms used across the Australian tyre industry.

  • All-Terrain (AT)

A versatile tyre designed to balance on-road comfort with off-road traction. Suitable for drivers who split their time between sealed roads, gravel roads and light off-road use.

  • Aspect Ratio

The height of a tyre’s sidewall expressed as a percentage of its width. For example, a 55 profile tyre has a sidewall height equal to 55% of the tyre’s width.

  • Aquaplaning

When a tyre loses contact with the road because water builds between the tread and the road surface.

  • Bead

The reinforced edge of the tyre that seals against the wheel rim.

  • EV Tyre

A tyre designed to suit the additional weight, instant torque and reduced cabin noise of electric vehicles.

  • Highway Terrain (HT)

A tyre designed primarily for sealed road driving, offering comfort, low noise, fuel efficiency and everyday handling.

  • Load Index

A numerical code that indicates the maximum weight a tyre can safely carry.

  • Light Truck (LT)

A stronger tyre construction designed for higher loads, towing, commercial use and demanding conditions.

  • Mud Terrain (MT)

An off-road focused tyre with aggressive tread blocks designed to maximise traction in mud, loose surfaces, rocky terrain and challenging off-road conditions.

  • Original Equipment (OE)

The tyre fitted by the vehicle manufacturer when the vehicle leaves the factory.

  • PSI

Pounds per Square Inch. A common measurement used for tyre pressure.

  • Rolling Resistance

The force required for a tyre to roll. Lower rolling resistance can improve fuel economy and EV range.

  • Rugged Terrain (RT)

A tyre positioned between an All-Terrain and Mud Terrain tyre. RT tyres typically feature a more aggressive tread pattern and reinforced construction than an AT tyre while maintaining better road manners and lower noise than a full MT tyre.

  • Section Width

The width of the tyre from sidewall to sidewall, measured in millimetres.

  • Sidewall

The area between the tread and the wheel rim containing tyre markings and specifications.

  • Speed Rating

A letter indicating the maximum speed a tyre can safely sustain under specified conditions.

  • Tread Wear Indicator

Built-in markers that show when a tyre has reached the legal minimum tread depth.

  • Tyre Rotation

The practice of moving tyres between positions on a vehicle to encourage even wear.

  • Underinflation

Running a tyre below the recommended pressure, which can increase wear, heat build-up and fuel consumption.

  • UTQG

Uniform Tyre Quality Grading. A rating system comparing treadwear, traction and temperature performance.

  • Wheel Alignment

Adjustment of wheel angles to ensure tyres wear evenly and the vehicle handles correctly.
